Depression

stars don't shineImagine living your life where you feel good about you, enjoying your life, feeling passionate about life, about YOU – being in a state of good emotional and mental health.

Like anxiety there can be many reasons for your depression – from family patterns and predisposition, personality factors, life events, work, trauma, loss, change, health issues etc. Whatever the reason, you have the ability to overcome depression.

I would say that at least 80% of the people I support have some level of depression AND given what they are going through, I say ‘why wouldn’t you be depressed’. Sure we can all have a down day or a bout of the blues when things feel overwhelming, however we can usually find ways to pull ourselves out of the dark hole. Depression is more than this, it is classed as a mood disorder where there are persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness and loss of interest. Severe depressive disorder may see you having trouble completing day-to- day activities, and in extreme cases you may feel as if life isn’t worth living.

 

Some signs and symptoms of depression could be:

  • Isolating
  • Avoidance
  • Loss of interest
  • Lethargy
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Feeling sad and tearful
  • Feeling worthless
  • Feeling anxious or irritablechoice
  • Physical aches and pains
  • Reduced desire to eat – loss of appetite leading to weight loss

There are levels of depression, from severe where you may not be functioning on a day to day basis to feeling unhappy and miserable about everybody and everything and not really having an understanding of why you feel this way. Living with depression can take its toll on you emotionally, physically and mentally as well as impacting upon every aspect of your life.
